Use of Performance Information in the Budget for Evidence-Based Decision Making: Learning from International Experience

The availability of a wealth of new data on performance is one of the major changes brought about by program and performance budgeting. This data is costly to produce, but also an important resource that can and should be used to boost the efficiency and impact of spending.

Performance data is valuable at different stages of the policy and budget cycle including: as an input to the design of strategy and policies, to inform spending allocation decisions, to fine-tune the budget during the year, to improve operational management of government programs, and to strengthen transparency and accountability, providing a clear picture of the impact of public spending.

Based on the international examples, this BCOP knowledge product outlines the reform directions and institutional roles towards a high-performing system.
