BCOP study visit on the Role of Austria's Parliament in Budgeting

Vienna, Austria

The Study Visit to Austrian parliament was organized from January 30 to February 1, 2014.

Twelve participants from five PEMPAL member countries were  familiarized with the budget planning process in Austria and the role of Parliament in monitoring and approving the government’s budget.  The objectives of the peer learning visit were:
•    Improved knowledge of the role of Parliament in Austria through PPT presentations, and more effectively through discussions with peers from Government, Parliament and other relevant institutions.
•    Had the opportunity to consider and discuss with peers and experts how the approaches outlined during the study visit could be applied to their own country contexts (if appropriate) and how their own experiences could be meaningful for other countries.

Thus within this context, the review of the Austrian fiscal governance system has stimulated participants of the peer-learning visit to look broader on the budget reforms and better understand the increased role of the legislature in the budget process.
